About Helm Operations

At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world’s maritime operations moving — from tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to offshore service vessels in the North Sea. Our flagship product, Helm Connect, helps our customers run their businesses more efficiently and reliably.

As we scale, we’re investing heavily in our QA automation infrastructure to ensure product teams can ship faster, safer, and with greater confidence. If you’re passionate about quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement, this is your opportunity to make an impact in a fast-growing marine software company.

Role Overview

As a QA Automation Developer, you will be a key player in delivering reliability at scale. You’ll design, develop, and maintain automated testing frameworks using TypeScript and Playwright, working closely with cross-functional product teams to embed quality into every stage of development.

This role offers the chance to work in a collaboration-first environment with global teammates, where proactive communication, ownership, and problem-solving are highly valued.

  • Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines to improve release velocity and confidence.
  • Conduct code reviews to ensure high standards within the QA automation team.

Collaboration & Quality Strategy

  • Work closely with QAs, developers, and product owners to understand workflows and prioritize automation for maximum value.
  • Report on test coverage for new workflows, hotfixes, and releases.
  • Participate actively in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, estimations, and retrospectives.

Product Knowledge & Continuous Improvement

  • Gain deep knowledge of assigned Helm products to create relevant, high-value test cases.
  • Recommend improvements to automation frameworks, testing strategy, and tooling.
  • Promote a quality-first culture, encouraging proactive bug prevention over reactive bug fixing.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in software testing with strong knowledge of QA best practices in agile environments.
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and Playwright for test automation.
  • Experience with cross-browser and mobile testing platforms such as BrowserStack.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to design automation for complex workflows and data-driven applications.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Soft Skills We Value

  • A passion for quality and accountability.
  • Proactive communicator who shares progress and asks clarifying questions.
  • Highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines in a remote environment.
  • Growth mindset — views mistakes as learning opportunities.
  • Team player who contributes to a positive, collaborative culture.

Why Join Helm Operations?

  • Flexible remote schedule with work-from-home benefits.
  • Health insurance, life insurance, and paid time off.
